This is probably going to be my favorite book of 2026! Marybeth Mayhew Whalen put together an absolute masterclass on how to perfectly blend a whimsical writing style, loveable characters from all generations, and tense action sequences without losing sight of the humanity of each person involved. This was by far the best quality and depth of writing I’ve read all year.
Main Themes
Each woman in this novel is caring a heavy secret they’re not sure what to do with. The pressures from others and their own doubts leaves them at the post office, trying to summon the courage to mail either a letter or a package that will change their lives forever. But when an angry, drunk husband tries to destroy his own unwanted letter, the situation quickly spirals out of control.
Barricaded in the post office and threatened at gun point, the four women realize they have to stick together and help each other if they want to make it out alive. As they alternately try to escape from and berate the man who has them trapped, they open up to each other about why they were there that day.
The biggest theme in this novel is hope. Every main character is in desperate need of some hope, even though their situations are all so different. Sometimes hope looks like the courage to not give up, even when the future is unsure. Other times, hope looks like trusting that everything will work on in the end. Hope also looks like pushing past the fear and giving people and places a second chance.
Faith Elements
God shows up in beautifully subtle ways in Handle with Care. When Sylvie wants to shrink back in fear, she finds the courage to step into the middle of the tension and bring peace to those around her. When Blythe is torn between the fleeting opinions of those around her, she is able to ground herself in the truth. When Nadine has every right to be angry, she chooses to be compassionate instead. When Morrow could have given up, she decides to keep fighting for what matters most. And when Sylvie starts to lose sight of the goodness in the past, she is reminded that some things are worth remembering.
Family Friendly Considerations
This was an incredibly clean and uplifting novel. Despite the tense situation at the post office, Whalen’s whimsical writing style gave it a lighthearted feel that put hope and humanity at the center of the stage rather than fear and suffering. I absolutely loved how respectfully she wrote her characters of all generations, with savvy senior citizens stealing the show in brilliant ways.
